Designed to replace steam locomotives in yards where Class 08 locomotives were either too heavy or the track curvature was too tight for them to operate. Sadly a fleet this size was soon found to far exceed the needs of British Railways in the 1960's as freight yards and branches were rapidly bing closed. Withdrawls commenced in the mid-60's and nearly new locomotives were sold on to industrial users such as the Coal Board. The service history of out locomotive continues to be a mystery but we know it first appeared in preservation on the Dean Forest Railway. It then moved on to Thingley Junction near Chippenham before arriving at her Williton home on the West Somerset Railway in 1995. Given a mechanical overhaul some three years ago, the locomotive sees service as the Williton works and Depot pilot. During the 2004 Diesel Gala she ventured up the line to Bishops Lydeard to assist the Class 08 on 'Shunter Shuttle' duties to Norton Fitzwarren. Owned privately by Dr. John Kennedy, she is managed on his behalf by the DEPG. |
