On Saturday 15th September whilst working the 14:50 Minehead-Bishops Lydeard train, the class 14 D9526 failed on the approach to Leigh Woods Level Crossing between Stogumber and Crowcombe Heathfield. The cause of the failure was a burnt out wire running to the compressor. The locomotive lost control air which brought it safely to a stand. After carrying out the correct protection, the crew established the compressor was not running. The crew were in contact with the fitters back at Williton, sadly there was very little that could be done in this case to rectify the fault on site. In conjunction with the WSR control it was decided to assist the train forward. Class 33 D6566 was provided from Bishops Lydeard with driver Len. The train was assisted forward to Bishops Lydeard.

Service disruption occurred to the following 3 services:
16:00 Minehead-Bishops Lydeard (held at Williton), 16:10 Bishops Lydeard-Minehead and 17:30 Minehead-Bishops Lydeard (20 late).
Luckily this is a relatively minor fault and the loco will be fixed ready for the Somerset in Autumn event. This is the first major failure of a diesel locomotive on a passenger train for several years on the railway. The Class 14 is normally very reliable. Still this is a very disappointing blow to the team. Apologies to anyone affected by the ensuing service disruption. (MC)
