D1010 - Persistent starting problems have been experienced with the loco and the batteries have been the main suspect. So today Neil and a few others decided to get to the bottom of this and after much searching found a defective cell. Being of the same type, a cell was "borrowed" from the stored set from 33 057. This was fitted, and the loco now cranks over like a good'un! D7018 - Martin and Simon were performing some "tweaks" on the replacement Mekydro transmission. DH16 - Repairs are nearly complete and the loco is expected to appear at the WSRA Steam Rally at Norton Fitzwarren on 7th & 8th August. 33 048 - The bad oil leak spotted during running last Sunday was investigated. The main crankcase door was removed and the root of the problem was identified as "shrinkage" in the door seals which meant that the dovetail joints between the sections of the seal no longer met and large gaps resulted through which oil could escape. The areas concerned were cleaned and de-greased and RTV silicon compound was used to fill the voids. Once the RTV had set sufficiently, the crankcase door was re-fitted. The success of the repair will be assessed during the next planned operation of the loco, over the weekend of the 7th & 8th August. D7017 was the loco in use today on the diagram normally operated by the DMU. Several of our regular contributors have sent in photos of the loco below. D1010 is out again next Saturday (31st).
