| Update 12th Nov. Following last week's excitement, attention has now turned to more mundane matters! However, I have now confirmed that the loco entered service on 4th November 1961, apparently a Saturday. So the test run took place exactly 50 years and one day later, also on a Saturday! This Saturday, the list of things from the examination at BL was consulted and one of the items was that three of the brake cylinders are blowing slightly. Not surprisingly, these are the only three that have not so far been overhauled. So Ken and Leroy exchanged the worst of these for an overhauled spare from stores and a brake test was performed that confirmed it was ok. The cylinder removed with a further stored unit will now be overhauled and then exchanged for the last two leaking cylinders. I cleaned the tips of the Field Divert Contactor Group which is the main suspect to have caused the "wheelslip oscillation" experienced during the test run. Brad is continuing painting of the pipes and fittings on the bogies when people are not getting in his way by changing brake cylinders! On Sunday, attention turned to the cab front lighting. I wired up the marker lights which have not been used on 33s for many years but were repaired during the bodywork overhaul. These can be turned to either white or red by means of a filter controlled by an adjacent knob. Both the headlight inverters were tested but one was found to be defective giving a zero output. But neither of the halogen bulbs are present in the headlight units so a full test could not be made. However, it is rumoured that some lamps, basically car headlamps, will be made available and a repairer has been identified to overhaul the defective inverter. |
