| Update 26th November The final brake cylinder was changed on Saturday and typically it proved to be the most difficult! All four bolts were extremely tight and fought all the way out. But the new cylinder works satisfactorily without any blows which means that the loco now has a full set of overhauled brake cylinders. The two units released will now be overhauled themselves so that we have two serviceable spares on the shelf, one of each hand. On Sunday, the drawhook guides were thoroughly cleaned out and re-greased, much congealed old grease was removed and disposed of! A rubber gaiter has been fitted to No.1 axle l/h brake cylinder so all cylinders now have these. The original FD1 Straight Air Brake Valve that was fitted in No.1 cab secondmans position while the windscreen was missing came to my attention again today. It was of course seized solid but with the aid of WD40, some heat, a pair of stillsons and a large hammer I got it apart! The rotating bit is very rusty but the main valve components look to be in reasonable order. As it is basically the same type of valve, it may be adapted to replace the blowing Control Air Reducing Valve by just swapping the top housing over. Brad has painted the buffer heads as well as a few more items including getting a second coat of red on the bogie springs, and his apprentice(!), Robin, has primed the insides of the heater grilles. |
